| One panel from The Overload Embroidery. New Stitches, No. 82. 2000. |
Her Grace The Duchess recently brought this item to my attention.
The Overload Embroidery consists of 34 panels, each 2.4 meters long and 0.9 meters deep. With a total length of 83 meters (272 feet), it is one of the world's longest embroideries. Like the more famous Bayeux Tapestry which recounts the Battle of Hastings, is a pictorial tribute to the D-Day landings in Normandy. It was commissioned by Lord Dulverton of Batsford, and is now on permanent display at the D-Day Museum in Portsmouth, England. The painting was by Sandra Lawrence and the embroidery itself was undertaken by the Royal School of Needlework and took five years to complete.
