Party dressing should be 10 per cent fantasy and inspiration, and 90 per cent rational, cool-headed consideration of what's comfortable, confidence-boosting and feasible. No point in a feathered, bejewelled, neon, traffic-stopping outfit if it's going to impinge on your enjoyment after 20 minutes. It should also have longevity – evening wear trends, despite what you might think, move at a glacial pace. More important than trends is gauging the tone of an event. Even then, it varies. I went to a wedding in Israel last year where the dress "code" spanned jeans to jewelled gowns.
