Since achieving U.S. success with the heavy pop influenced "Untouched" and "Take Me on the Floor" back in 2008-2009, Australian native The Veronicas have been struggling to get their third studio album off the ground due to typical record label drama. Their last release, "Lolita" in summer 2012, was a dark turn for the sisters, but their newest single, the haunting "
You Ruin Me", seems to be the right direction for the talented duo.
Instead of maintaining their electro-pop sound found on their previous albums, The Veronicas show signs of maturity and heartache on the new "
You Ruin Me", as the sisters sing of a relationship that has left them both broken. The song does a fantastic job at focusing all attention on the chilling vocal performances from both Jessica and Lisa. "
Cause you play me like a symphony, play me till your fingers bleed, I'm your greatest masterpiece," The Veronicas sings on the impressive, string-heavy chorus.
For the accompanying music video, unveiled last night, the sisters play experienced ballerinas in scenes seemingly inspired by the film
Black Swan. In gorgeous gowns, The Veronicas take center stage, where they rightfully belong, on Sydney's State Theater stage as their kidnapped, backstabbing lover frightening looks on from the balcony. Though they may be overcoming sadness, the girls show they certainly aren't to be taken advantage of.
"
You Ruin Me" is a vast departure from what we have heard from the duo before. It's a dramatic, heart-wrenching ballad that fans of the sisters knew they were capable of. Taken as the official lead single off their upcoming self-titled new album, The Veronicas seem more comfortable telling personal, touching stories from their own lives. There are no uptempo beats or scandalous lyrics, just honest musicianship from a duo that has the experience needed to succeed.
